Evolution of the Xoom X

Last month we shot several new commercials in Peru for the United Kingdom and Latin America. Here are some stills of our actors doing the Xoom X:

So how did the Xoom X start? Well, way back in 2005…

We were preparing to film commercials for the Philippines and our advertising agency sent over some photographs for a storyboard. One of these photos was of an actress with her arms raised enthusiastically in the air:

Our Vice President of Marketing at Xoom saw this photo and said, “Look! She’s doing the Xoom X!” And ever since this happy accident, Xoom fans all around the world have been doing the Xoom X.

Mar Celebrates the 2010 Panagbenga Flower Parade

This past weekend, participated in the 2010 Baguio City Panagbenga Flower Festival and Parade. This well-known and loved fiesta is the second largest festival and parade in the Philippines, with more than an estimated 1 million spectators at the February event. and their key cash pickup partners, Cebuana Lhuillier and M. Lhuillier, participated for the first time in the Baguio City Panagbenga Flower Festival and Parade.  We actively participated in the 5-hour long parade with cobranded signage on both parade floats, as well as event girls who gave out Xoom fans, frisbees and t-shirts throughout the parade route.  Gene Gutierrez, the Regional VP, and Pex Arellano of the call center were in attendance.
Baguio City is one the largest areas of remittance transactions for in the entire Luzon region. Many people from this Ilocano region work as OFWs overseas or have emigrated to countries like the U.S., Canada and the U.K, and still regularly send money back home to the Philippines.

Jan Celebrates the 30th Anniversary Cebu Sinulog Festival Parade

Cebu is well recognized as “Xoom Country” – longstanding customers from Cebu who send money to their Cebuano friends and family attest to the popularity of Xoom in the Cebu province.  In fact, it is nearly impossible to avoid seeing window stickers, light boxes and billboards in and around our network partners in this densely populated Visayan province. Because of this, has participated in the Cebu Sinulog Festival for the past three years in the Sinulog Parade that takes place on the last Sunday of the Festival.

What is the Cebu Sinulog Festival?  It’s an annual Mardi Gras of colorful costumes and pomp street dancing in celebration of the time when the first Filipinos embraced Christianity, or Catholicism, to be specific.

This happened in Cebu in 1521 when the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived and planted the cross on the shores of the Philippines. It was said that when Magellan presented an image of the baby boy Jesus (the Sto. Nino image) to the island’s ruler, Rajah Humabon and his wife Hara Amihan, the natives performed their ritual dance.
This history is the basis for what is now known as Sinulog street dancing where participants in various vibrantly colored costumes dance to a lively beat. Many of the country’s top celebrities also perform during the festival.  The parade this year was attended by over 3 million people and watched by the entire country on all of the Filipino TV networks.

Gene Gutierrez, Regional Vice President of the Asia-Pacific, and Pex Arellano, Head of Call Center in the Philippines, had a chance this year to be a part of the float and parade activities of both Cebuana Lhuillier and M. Lhuillier.  These photos show only a small part of the immensity and celebration of the Sinulog Parade.  Enjoy!
